SWNY Shearing School Announced for November 6th

  • Saturday, November 6, 2021, 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM

Cornell Cooperative Extension’s Southwest New York Dairy, Livestock, and Field Crops Program (SWNYDLFC) is looking forward to an upcoming program that’s new to the region: the SWNY Shearing School. This classroom and on-farm training brings together experts in sheep production & management and fiber marketing. This program will be held on Saturday, November 6th from 9am – 4pm.

Skilled instructors will share information in producing, shearing, and marketing fiber for small and mid-sized farms. Topics will include what makes a good fleece; managing for quality fleece; how wool is marketed; live shearing and hoof trimming with a retired professional shearer; and how to sort and pack raw wool.

On November 6th, the classroom training will be held at the Alden, NY Fire Department and the on-farm training will be held at Sunny Hill Farm in Alden, NY. Registration is $75 per person and includes the course, printed notes, and lunch. There are several pay scale options that include scholarships and “paying it forward”. The class is limited to the first 20 people who register.
