Special Guest Ag-Solar Session THIS FRIDAY

Please join us Friday from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. for this special guest session of the Ag-Solar Team meeting where Bobbie Severson, Extension Associate in the Cornell Dyson SC Johnson College will talk with us about her current research project “The New Dawn for Shepherds”

Grazing sheep under utility-scale solar arrays controls vegetative growth and is a means for sheep farmers to augment farm income as service providers. Preliminary data reported by NYSERDA estimates 10.6 gigawatts of solar installations will be in the planning or production phase by 2030 and Cornell research suggests that over 200,000 sheep would be needed. The American Sheep Grazing Association suggests there is a need for a third party to negotiate contracts and coordinate grazing logistics. Such an increase in the number of sheep may require additional markets and processing capacity. The New Dawn for Shepherds: Grazing Sheep under Utility-scale Solar Arrays seeks to examine how a producers-owned third party can benefit this emerging opportunity for sheep farmers.
